festival 06: Shootback

In the run-up to the streetfootballworld festival 06, young participants from the 24 delegations photographed their world. Each delegation was provided with 10 disposable cameras to distribute among their players. They took pictures of their lives around football: their neighborhood, family, mates, their team, local pitch, ball and boots. The ‘shootback’ photos were displayed during festival 06 on the giant screen in the stadium and in 2009 at a photo exhibition at the Sony World Photographer Award in Cannes, France.

No artificial light, no make up, no tripod. Just raw images from the streets of the world. Find a best of selection of the shootback photos in our gallery! Click on one of the pictures to open the gallery.

The ‘shootback’ photography project was inspired by the streetfootballworld network member Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). Located in Nairobi’s largest slum Mathare, MYSA began the first-ever ‘shootback’ project in 1997 by providing boys and girls with a camera to photograph their daily lives. The project was a massive success, providing participants with vocational training and starkly portraying the poverty, drug abuse, violence and spread of AIDS in Mathare. The streetfootballworld festival 06 provided the perfect opportunity to widen the ‘shootback’ project to include young photographers from around the world.
