Young leaders from ten streetfootballworld network members are among the participants at the 2012 UNOSDP Youth Leadership Camp in Doha, Qatar.

From 9-19 January, 30 youth leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa and the Palestinian Authority are coming together for a ten-day camp to develop their leadership skills. All participants are involved with grassroots organisations in the field of Sports for Development and Peace.

Another four young people from Qatar will take part in the event, which empowers participants to create change in their communities. The camp focuses on experiential learning, addressing topics such as health, gender, disability, education and peace.

The streetfootballworld network members represented at the Youth Leadership Camp are Altus Sport, South African Homeless Street Soccer, Play Soccer, Whizzkids United, AMANDLA EduFootball, Moving the Goalposts, MYSA, Sport in Action, and the Al Quds Association for Democracy and Dialogue.

The participating organisations were suggested by streetfootballworld upon the request of UN Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace Wilfried Lemke.

The importance of youth leadership
“The United Nations has long understood the unique power of sport for change; but for change to happen, strong leadership is needed,” stated Mr Lemke, highlighting the importance of developing youth leadership.

“The UNOSDP 2012 Youth Leadership Camp provides concrete and practical leadership skills from some of the best leaders and experts in the field, in a truly collaborative spirit. This ensures that the lessons learned will guide these young leaders in their future endeavours.”
