Aug 252010 | SEP promotes empowerment in their Annual Event and Educational Camp

streetfootballworld network member SEP successfully hosted the second edition of its football-based educational event for boys and girls under 20 in Oyugis, Kenya.

The SEP Annual Event and Educational Camp 2010 took place in Oyugis, Rachuonyo District, Kenya, from August 13th to 15th. This year, girls were the focus of the event; through information dissemination and an awareness campaign, SEP aimed to attract more girls from society to its programmes.

Six teams of each boys and girls participated in two separate tournaments, with a team from SEP’s fellow streetfootballworld network member Moving the Goalposts taking part in the girls’ competition.

HIV/AIDS prevention through education
As well as football, the event also offered a wide range of activities, workshops, theatre performances, life skill games and public speeches on educational topics such as the environment, female empowerment and HIV/AIDS prevention.

The Upendo Art Group presented a play on male circumcision, aimed at dispelling the myth that circumcision prevents infection with HIV/AIDS. Throughout the event there were five VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) counsellors on site, offering free VCT services to all participants and visitors.

Ongoing success
In its second year, the SEP Annual Event proved to be hugely effective in raising awareness in the community and in delivering life skills and education on pressing social issues. SEP aims to build on this year's success to establish the event as an annual institution in the region.
