Dec 92011 | MYSA and Sony win at the Beyond Sport Awards

streetfootballworld network member MYSA and our partner Sony have each received one of the coveted Beyond Sports Awards in Cape Town!

The awards ceremony took place for the third time as part of the Beyond Sport Summit.

Setting an example for Africa – congratulations, MYSA!
MYSA was awarded in the “Leadership in Sport” category for their exemplary work over many years with young people in one of Nairobi’s biggest slums. MYSA is one of the largest African organisations in the field of Development through Sport. The organisation is run by young leaders, thus providing educational opportunities which reach far beyond football. Last year, MYSA celebrated its 25th anniversary. Congratulations!

Dream Goal – Sony’s Legacy programme in collaboration with streetfootballworld
streetfootballworld’s long-term partner Sony won in the category for “Corporate of The Year”. The award recognised Sony’s excellent work during the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. A component of the Dream Goal programme was implemented in collaboration with streetfootballworld.

The Siyakhona (“We Can”) initiative enabled young people throughout the world to document their lives on camera and present the results at the World Cup. In South Africa, twelve young citizen journalists were trained through the programme.

Dream Goal also gave 15,000 South African children the chance to attend a World Cup match in cooperation with streetfootballworld network member Grassroot Soccer. Sony’s programme also provided big projector screens and HIV/AIDS testing facilities in Cameroon and Ghana.

The streetfootballworld network at Beyond Sport
The awards ceremony marked the end of an exciting Beyond Sport Summit. streetfootballworld was an active partner in the staging of the 2011 event, with Beyond Football bringing together 100 experts to discuss the social potential of the game. As part of the Summit’s programme, streetfootballworld also offered a workshop on the subject of Development through Football, and participated in a breakout panel entitled “Unique Income Streams for NGOs”.

The Summit was an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the importance of cross-sector collaboration. Thirty network members and several streetfootballworld partners attended the event in Cape Town – thanks to all for the great work!
