Community facts

Tarrafal is a fishing port on the northwestern coast of the island of Santiago, to the north of Cape Verde’s capital Praia. Despite the idyllic setting, local communities share many of their country’s problems, notably a shortage of economic resources which forces people to earn their living abroad. The limited supply of water and agricultural land coupled with a lack of local industry makes it difficult for young people to find jobs. The average age is 19, with around 45% of the population under 15 years of age. These factors have contributed to an increase in crime, as well as drug and alcohol abuse.

Delta Cultura Cabo Verde (DCCV)

Delta Cultura Cabo Verde (DCCV) runs a Child and Youth Center through which they empower children and young people aged 6-20 from poor and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Their aim is to provide opportunities for young people in order to reduce poverty, violence, drug abuse and emigration. In order to achieve these goals, DCCV uses a threefold approach of football, culture and education. The football curriculum provides training for 150 boys and girls from 8-17 years, with all participants also taking part in tutoring groups. Computer courses, language classes and educational events are complemented by traditional dancing and drumming sessions, as well as workshops in painting, sewing, photography and performance.

The centre's programme
delta cultura

The centre will use football as a tool to promote teamwork, social skills, nutrition, and life skills that extend beyond the pitch. By encouraging young people to use new technologies and take part in a range of activities, the centre will help them avoid risks such as drug abuse, crime, and violence. A special emphasis will also be placed on engaging participants with traditional creole culture. Further objectives will be to improve school grades, promote creativity and cultural awareness, and develop Portuguese and English language skills among participants. Activities taking place will include dance workshops, singing classes, painting, homework groups, computer training, theatre, and of course football leagues and tournaments.
